On the 25th January there will be celebrations a ‘plenty around the world in the form of a ‘Burns Supper’, to celebrate the life of Scotland’s National Poet. The first supper was held in memoriam at Burns Cottage by Burns’s friends, on 21 July 1801, the fifth anniversary of his death and it has been a regular occurrence ever since!

If you’ve never been to a Burns Supper before, here is a little snippet of what you can expect…

Expect to be piped in by a Piper, and once seated, your host will hold a welcoming speech, and the Selkirk Grace is said. You’ll then have your starter, usually a Scotch Broth soup. And then….

Be prepared to stand for the Haggis! Yes, the Haggis will also be piped in by the Piper, laid on the hosts table, and the ‘Address to a Haggis’ is recited.

Followed by your Haggis main course, dessert, and then the 3 speeches; Immortal Memory Address to the Lassies, and finishing with the Reply to the Lassies.
