Anyone who knows us personally, knows that we are impartial to a trip to a Arran on the trusty bike. Just down the road from Kennacraig (our landing point on the mainland), Arran is just a stone throw away from Luxury & Rare Whisky HQ, and we have visited the distillery many times, as well as the new Lagg Distillery in 2018. This set is an intriguing nod to the shady history of Arran’s distilling. Back during the 18th and 19th century the island was a producer of illicit whisky. “The Illicit Stills” 56.4% – Smugglers’ Series Vol.1

Limited to 8,700 Bottles

‘The Illicit Stills’, a dram that’s robust, has a heavier peat influence, which is more in tradition to whisky previous produced on the Island of Arran, in days gone by. The Illicit Stills, includes some heavily peated Arran Malt at 50ppm and Arran malt which has been fully matured in Port Pipes. The presence of the heavily peated Arran is said to be perfectly balanced by the sweetness of older bourbon barrels.

“The High Seas” 55.4% – Smuggler’ Series Vol.2

‘The High Seas’ pay tribute to the exuberant character of those striving to outwit the Government’s representatives in the pursuit of the production of the famed Arran Waters. This dram is a powerful marriage of whisky matured in the finest rum casks with time-honoured peated spirit and a rich layer of first-fill Bourbon barrel adding sweetness and fruit. The use of rum casks in the maturation serves as recognition of Arran’s importance, in years gone by, in the trade of diverse, black market liquor. The resulting liquid is complex, full of character and a perfect tribute to these independent characters of Arran.

“The Exciseman” 56.8% – Smugglers’ Series Vol.3

The Exciseman’ pays the final tribute to the exuberant character of those striving to outwit the Government’s representatives in the pursuit of the production of the famed Arran Waters. The Madeira casks used in this final volume, are similar to the ones utilised by Arran’s illicit distillers, who often stored and transported locally produced whisky in old Madeira casks brought over from the continent by their smuggling counterparts. The Quarter Casks are a nod to the type of small casks which would have been the easiest to transport.  The resulting liquid is complex, full of character and a perfect tribute to these independent characters of Arran.
