To celebrate passing 1 year of Luxury & Rare Whisky Competitions, we asked ourselves, what is the ultimate prize we can offer our Whiskatorians to celebrate this landmark? It didn’t take us long to decide and agree it simply had to be the majestic and spectacular Port Ellen 40 Year Old, 9 Rogue Casks. From the distillery now considered the lost Islay jewel, and on the doorstep of Luxury & Rare Whisky HQ, we thought “Not only is it the ultimate collectors bottle, but this is the oldest official release of Port Ellen ever, it literally aged on the other side of the warehouse doors I practiced my football shooting against”

Port Ellen 1979 40 Year Old Untold Stories: 9 Rogue Casks

The second release from a series of bottles from the legendary Islay distillery, titled Untold Stories.

This whisky was distilled in 1979 and has been aged for 40 years. It is made up of four American oak hogsheads and five European oak butts that have been bottled at cask strength of 50.9%.  These nine casks of whisky were discovered and brought together by the master distiller to craft this unique limited edition release: the oldest and most limited to date.

We would love to say that we have cracked a bottle open, but unfortunately, this one hasn’t yet made it onto our whisky shelves! We’ve heard that the nose is delicate, with a mild smoke complemented by burnt orange, fresh herbs and a grassy note. The palate brings a much more pronounced smoke, alongside rich leather and pipe tobacco with a gentle wood spice. The finish is long and satisfying with a wisp of smoke remaining.

Port Ellen Distillery

Official bottlings from the Islay distillery of Port Ellen are something of a phenomenon. Port Ellen distillery was founded as a malt mill in 1825, later being developed as a distillery between 1833 and 1892. The distillery closed its doors for the last time in 1983, but with the resurgence of single malt whisky, stocks from the closed distillery became revered for their quality. Limited editions of the remaining liquid were released almost annually by owners Diageo, to much acclaim from whisky connoisseurs. In 2019, plans to revive the distillery were approved and Port Ellen is set to re-open in 2021.

Although it now currently is primarily known for its Single Malt, Port Ellen was also used in a number of Blends, including King of Scot, Big Peat, and King George V.
